The island of Phuket is the largest in Thailand and is a very tourist destination, especially for its beaches. Phuket has the advantage of being easily accessible by plane and car, to offer well developed infrastructures with paradisiacal beaches.
Here are the main attractions:
Beaches
The beauty of its beaches with white sand and turquoise waters is breathtaking. As is often the case, there are more crowded beaches and quieter ones. We recommend visiting Kata Noi and Kata Yai; Karon and Surin. They are all ideal for relaxing, water sports and excellent restaurants and bars.
The old town
To discover the regional history, we must go to the south-east of the island, far from hotels and beaches. In the center of the city you can walk through the streets with colonial style buildings with Portuguese and Chinese influences.
The Giant Buddha
This is one of the most famous places in Phuket, with its nearly 26 meters wide, 45 meters high and 135 tons . The Buddha is at the top of a mountain and is easily identifiable from the road. Free entry.
Patong
If you want to celebrate, it’s Patong you have to go to. The beach is not very beautiful and it is usually crowded, but there is a multitude of bars, from the quietest to a little beer to the most exotic.
Wat Chalong Temple
This is the most famous Buddhist temple in Phuket, it is surrounded by gardens and is not visited by tourists, monks also go there to pray. Its architecture, decoration and colors are surprising. If you like temples, there are 29 in Phuket.
Hidden Huts
In the center of Phuket you can admire a good amount of Chinese temples. We must visit the Taoist Temple of the Serene Light , restored in the late 19th century. We recommend that you visit at the end of September or in October, during the Vegetarian Festival, one of the most important festivals in the city.
Gastronomy
On this island, you will find the best dishes with curry (except in India, of course) and the specialties of Thai cuisine, from traditional gastronomy to innovative dishes. Some restaurants are in wonderful homes from the beginning of the last century to eat in a most pleasant setting. Typical dishes include seafood, squid noodles, pepper and garlic pork, green papaya salad and lamb curry.
You will be surprised to know that the coffee is now grown in Phuket and it is easy to find this drink in charming places.
Markets
When you visit the center of the city, do not forget to visit the local markets. It is here that one can best savor the atmosphere of this city, its flavors and its essences.
